President Joe Biden commended a ceasefire deal Thursday between Israel and Hamas, following 11 days of conflict that left people dead.
Speaking from the White House, Biden said he spoke to Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, calling for a ceasefire while expressing support of Israel.
“The United States fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself against indiscriminate rocket attacks from Hamas and other Gaza-based terrorist groups that have taken the lives of innocent civilians in Israel,” Biden said.
Fighting between Israelis and Palestinians was reignited after a group of Palestinian families faced eviction from their homes in Jerusalem to be replaced with Jewish nationalists, according to CNN.
The violence resulted in the deaths of more than 200 Palestinians and 12 Israelis, per reports.
Biden was facing pressure from members of the Democratic party to speak out against Israel’s attacks in Gaza.
“I believe the Palestinians and Israelis equally deserve to live safely and securely and enjoy equal measures of freedom, prosperity and democracy,” Biden said. “My administration will continue our quiet, relentless diplomacy toward that end.”
