President Joe Biden nominated eight people for U.S. attorney positions, with one that will oversee the prosecutions of people charged in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, the Associated Press reported.
The White House named Erek L. Barron, Nicholas W. Brown, Matthew M. Graves, Clifford D. Johnson, Zachary A. Myers, Rachael S. Rollins, Trini E. Ross and Vanessa Waldref to serve in offices around the country.
If the Senate confirms them, most of them will make history by becoming the first Black or female U.S. attorneys to run their district, according to AP. They would lead offices in Washington state, New York, D.C., Massachusetts, Maryland and Indiana.
Barron would be the first Black U.S. attorney in the District of Maryland, while Rollins, who’s currently the district attorney in Suffolk County, Maryland, would be the first Black woman to be a U.S. attorney in the state.
The attorneys would all take the lead on combatting the rise in gun crimes throughout the country over the last year and a half.
“Putting more cops on the beat, supporting community prevention programs, and cracking down on illegal gun trafficking. Confirming U.S. Attorneys as the chief federal law enforcement officers in their district is important for these efforts,” The White House said in a statement.
