Rachael Rollins, First Black US Attorney in MA, Facing Death Threats

In Summary

Rollins was elected as the District Attorney in Suffolk County in 2018 and nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as Massachusetts’ U.S. attorney in July 2021.

Rachael Rollins, who became the first Black woman to serve as Massachusetts’ U.S. attorney, has received several death threats.

The death threats increased after the Senate voted to confirm her post in December. Rollins is seeking protection from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Republicans questioned Rollins’ commitment to reforming the criminal justice system from within, such as dismissing some low-level crimes as a district attorney.

The threats toward Rollins have created a higher sense of protection over people of color in the federal judicial system. Rollins is one of many faces in the most diverse class of US attorneys in the history of the department.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland received the letter from multiple faith leaders, including Rev. Jeffrey Brown, associate pastor for the Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

Brown said Rollins needs protection from the U.S. Marshalls.

“We have been through an era where others have been killed because of the stances that they were taking,” Brown told CNN, adding women of color face a higher level of danger and scrutiny. “I believe the threats are coming because the atmosphere feels like they can easily target women of color.”

Rollins has also received threats in her Instagram and Twitter comments, warning her to hide her kids.

“They were saying that she’s hotheaded and insane and accused her of identity politics, but what was really disturbing was the one that went directly to her where they would call her the n-word and the b-word and talking about putting a bullet in her head,” Brown said.
