Raven Saunders used an Incredible Hulk mask and purple and green hair to protest for the oppressed. According to AP News, Saunders lifted her arms above her head and formed her wrist into an “X” during the photo op at her medal’s ceremony. Saunders explained that the “X” represents the intersection of where all people who are oppressed meet.
Saunders has raised an eyebrow at the Olympics’ failure to live up to celebrating diversity. She questions if they have a spot for a person like her: someone who is openly gay, has contemplated suicide and has witnessed poverty and depression within her Black community.
Following Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka, and other Black athletes who have taken a stand for their mental health, Saunders is ready to take her stand.

Her infamous Incredible Hulk mask has a deeper meaning than others may think. According to AP News, the mask that Saunders wore is a reminder that a woman who has bench pressed 480 pounds, squatted 700 pounds, and won four NCAA titles is bound to appear tough on the outside, but might be different on the inside.
“If not for sending a text to an old therapist I would not be here [right now],” Saunders said. “All these things weighing on me for 22 years, I was finally able to process it. I was finally able to separate Raven from ‘The Hulk.’”
