Los Angeles reports the highest rates in hate crimes in 12 years, with many incidents not being reported.Los Angeles County reports the rate of hate crimes is the highest it’s been in 12 years, according to the county’s Commission on Human Relations report.
The U.S. Department of Justice reported that 54% of hate-motivated incidents, including hate crimes, were not reported to law enforcement during 2011-2015. According to the report, Black people were disproportionately targeted in racial hate crimes. They made up 42% of victims when they are only about 9% of county residents.

In an article from The Los Angeles Times, they report the total number of hate crimes in 2020 was 635, which is a 20% jump from the previous year and the largest number since 2008. They also report that hate crimes increased for Black people by 35%, anti-Latino hate crimes increased by 58% and there was an increase of 76% in hate crimes against Asians. Hate crimes reported against transgender people were about 94% violent.
The report says after Black people, Latinos were the second-largest group of victims of racial hate crimes, making up 26% of the reports received.
The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that half of hate crimes are not reported.
