New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Saturday threw her support behind Maya Wiley for the New York City mayoral race.
“It is so important that we come together as a movement and rank Maya #1 because if we don’t come together as a movement, we will get a New York City built by and for billionaires,” Ocasio-Cortez said at an event. “Maya Wiley is the one. She will be a progressive in Gracie Mansion.”
Wiley, a civil rights attorney, also received an endorsement from Hakeem Jeffries, chair of the House Democratic Caucus, according to CNN.
Wiley has been gaining support amongst progressives, such as Rep. Jamaal Bowman, New York State Sen. Julia Salazar and State Assemblymember Maritza Davila.
In a statement, according to CNN, Wiley said that having Ocasio-Cortez’s support meant the world to her.
“AOC is a fearless champion for our city in Congress. She has fought for working people, taken on corporate greed, revolutionized the discussion on the urgent need to address climate change, and is an advocate for a more equitable economy. Nobody says and means change like her,” Wiley said.
