Report: Derek Chauvin Close to Reaching Plea Deal in Federal Case

Derek Chauvin, the ex-Minneapolis cop who killed George Floyd, is close to reaching a plea deal in his federal case, sources told CBS Minnesota.

Chauvin could get a 20-to-25-year sentence as part of the plea, according to reports. It would be served alongside his state sentence.

The former cop was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison on Friday for murdering Floyd. He was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder.

The 45-year-old may have referenced the possible deal last week right before his sentencing, saying, “Due to legal matters, I’m not able to give a full formal statement … I give my condolences to the Floyd family, there’s gonna be some other information in the future that will be of interest and I hope these will give you some peace of mind.”

Chauvin faced life in prison if convicted in federal court.
