Serena Williams Rookie Card is Auctioned for Nearly $45,000

Tennis superstar Serena Williams’s 2003 rookie card was auctioned off last weekend for $44,280, setting a record by becoming the most expensive female-athlete card sold. 

The previous record was held by former soccer player Mia Hamm, whose 1992 card sold for $34,440 in June.

According to ESPN Williams’ rookie card was sold to alternative-asset trading platform Alt, which made the purchase on behalf of a private client.  

“People are accepting women’s trading cards as collectables,” Ken Goldin, founder of Golding Auctions, told ESPN.

Williams is still competing for a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam title. The tennis star hasn’t played since getting injured at a first-round match at Wimbledon in June.
