Tennis champion Serena Williams will not be playing at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She confirmed the news at a press conference on Sunday, according to CBS Sports.
The 39-year-old has three gold medals in women’s doubles from playing with her sister Venus Williams in 2000, 2008 and 2012. She also won a gold in singles in 2012.
Williams is currently competing in Wimbledon, looking to win her eighth title overall, and her first since 2016. She has 23 Grand Slam singles titles, and is just one title away from tying with Margaret Court for the most titles of all time.
The Summer Olympics was supposed to take place last summer, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will begin on Friday, July 23, 2021, and run until Sunday, August 8, 2021.
