Though the circumstances of the incident remain unclear, law enforcement officials confirmed a person of interest was questioned overnight. Police are examining the possibility that the driver was fleeing the scene of another incident.

The red SUV crashed through barricades and an officer fired their weapon at the car in an attempt to stop it. It was then seen moving quickly down the parade path before ramming into a crowd of people, NBC News reported.

Hospitals in the area treated at least 28 people injured at the parade. Three of those patients were in critical condition. According to a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, at least one Catholic priest and several Catholic school children were hurt.

As a result, streets in the area, as well as local businesses, remain closed. Waukesha Public Schools is also closed Monday.

The event was Waukesha’s 58th Annual Christmas Parade, which was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Authorities do not believe the incident is connected to the not guilty verdict in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial.
