According to the Associated Press, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Transportation said there are no more motorists stranded on Interstate 95, which was closed due to a blizzard.
Hundreds of drivers were stranded overnight in Virginia on Interstate 95 during a winter storm that saw snow and freezing temperatures, the Associated Press reported.
Authorities struggled to get to the drivers after a crash involving six tractor-trailers brought traffic to a standstill, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Virginia Senator Tim Kaine tweeted that he started his two-hour commute to the Capitol and ended up being stuck on I-95 for 19 hours.
“I’m still not near the Capitol. My office is in touch with @VaDOT to see how we can help other Virginians in this situation. Please stay safe, everyone,” Kaine tweeted.
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said he’s working with state officials to help stranded motorists.
“An emergency message is going to all stranded drivers connecting them to support, and the state is working with localities to open warming shelters as needed. While sunlight is expected to help @VaDOT clear the road, all Virginians should continue to avoid 1-95,” he tweeted.
Marcie Parker, Virginia’s Department of Transportation Fredericksburg District engineer, said the department is working to clear the roads, calling the situation “unprecedented.”
“In addition to clearing the trucks, we are treating for snow and several inches of ice that has accumulated around them to ensure that when the lanes reopen, motorists can safely proceed to their destination,” Parker said, according to AP.
According to the National Weather Service, 7 to 11 inches of snow fell in the area on Monday.
