Texas Judge Rules in Favor of Conviction for Death Row Inmate Rodney Reed

In Summary

Rodney Reed, a death row convict in Texas, has been denied a new trial by a judge, once again leaving his fate in the hands of the Court of Criminal Appeals.

Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Beyoncé and LL Cool J have all petitioned in favor of death row inmate Rodney Reed, and while they may have been able to contribute to the halt of his execution, a Texas judge has recommended he does not get a new trial, per CNN

“Applicant has not proven by clear and convincing evidence that no reasonable juror would have convicted him of capital murder,” per a document signed by Judge J. D. Langley. “Applicant has not proven by clear and convincing evidence that he is actually innocent.”

Reed, a Black man, was 29 years old when he was arrested and accused with Stacey Stites’ sexual assault and murder in 1997, per a website petitioning for his freedom. His DNA was determined to match a little amount of sperm found inside the victim’s body, and prosecutors contended there was enough sufficient evidence to convict him.

Reed has maintained his innocence for more than two decades. According to the website, there is zero evidence he had anything to do with the crime.

“He was in a consensual relationship with Stacey Stites and the only DNA of Rodney’s that was found was from this consensual relationship,” it reads. “The prosecution, citing that DNA persuaded an all-white jury of his guilt; he was convicted and sentenced to die by lethal injection.”

Reed was set to die by lethal injection on November 20, 2019, but the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals overturned that decision, issuing a stay and remanding his case to the trial court for further consideration on claims that he is innocent.
