A group of students at a North Texas school were disciplined after they set up a slave auction on social media where they pretended to sell their Black classmates, according to the Star-Telegram.  

Aledo Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Susan Bohn said that students of the Daniel Ninth Grade Campus cyberbullied other students based on the color of their skin.

The Star-Telegram posted a screenshot from Snapchat where the auction allegedly took place, and it showed group names such as “Slave Trade” and an unspecified racial slur.  

“Can you imagine what it’s like for somebody to put a price on your head?” activist and organizer of the Parker County Progressives, Tony Crawford, told the Telegram. “I cannot imagine the embarrassment and hurt that people you might be friends with are having that conversation.” 

Dr. Shaun Harper, a professor at the University of Southern California, told Black News Tonight’s Marc Lamont Hill that racism in schools isn’t new.  

“What are the teachers teaching these students about the enslavement of African peoples?” Harper said. “I think the teachers are responsible for this.”
