CBS ‘The Activist’ To Be Altered After Controversial Response

In Summary

The competition-based reality show will now be a documentary instead. One of the show’s producing partners admits, “We got it wrong.”

The new CBS series The Activist will now be turned into a documentary instead of a five-episode competition reality show, after receiving a controversial response from the public.

The series was supposed to comprise of six contestants who would compete in a variety of activism-themed competitions before meeting at a summit of world leaders in Italy. The show was referred to as “awe-inspiring,” “ground-breaking” and sure to “inspire real change” in the press release.

However, shortly after the show was announced by CBS, it began receiving backlash from multiple communities. As a result, the show’s producers revealed they will restructure the production. The Activist will lose the competitive format and instead of being a five-episode series, it will now be a  documentary.

Great footage for the original series has been recorded, but with the new version of The Activist on the way, producers will start over and shoot new footage.

The series was expected to premiere on Oct. 22, 2021, but after the public outcry from some social media influencers, bloggers and opinion writers, CBS and its partners Global Citizen and Live Nation issued a statement.

The Activist was designed to show [to] a wide audience the passion, long hours and ingenuity that activists put into changing the world, hopefully inspiring others to do the same. However, it has become apparent the format of the show as announced distracts from the vital work these incredible activists do in their communities every day. The push for global change is not a competition and requires a global effort.”

“As a result, we are changing the format to remove the competitive element and reimagining the concept into a primetime documentary special (air date to be announced),” the joint statement continues. “It will showcase the tireless work of six activists and the impact they have advocating for causes they deeply believe in. Each activist will be awarded a cash grant for the organization of their choice, as was planned for the original show.”

The statement concludes by saying: “Activists and community leaders around the world work every day, often without fanfare, to advance protections for people, communities, and our planet. We hope that by showcasing their work we will inspire more people to become more involved in addressing the world’s most pressing issues. We look forward to highlighting the mission and lives of each of these incredible people.”

The original idea for The Activist was introduced to the public in May, however with no high-profile people mentioned in the announcement, the show flew under radar. The vision for show hadn’t changed when the hosts were officially revealed last week, although this time around people took noticed and were upset about the direction of the show.

With The Activist now set to be a documentary, it will still focus on the same activists but they will no longer compete against each other. There is currently no official release date.
