The ‘Exonerated Five’s’ Yusef Salaam on Memoir & Prison Reform

Yodit Tewolde sat down with Yusef Salaam, 1/5 of the “Exonerated Five” on his memoir “Better, Not Bitter” and why it’s important to work with Black youth. “A lot of the things that they go through, sometimes people tell them that they’re crazy,” Salaam said.

“The whole situation is that they’re being trained to believe that they are not worth anything when the truth of the matter is that they’re worth everything.”

For Salaam, his book is a way to tell his story. “This was not an anomaly. This is something that happens all the time,” he said.
