According to Deadline, Will Smith was named best actor for his depiction of Venus and Serena Williams’ father Richard Williams in the film King Richard, which also received wins for best supporting actress Aunjanue Ellis, breakout actor Saniyya Sidney and emerging director Reinaldo Marcus Green.

“It’s been a fantastic year for film,” said AAFCA president and co-founder Gil Robertson, per Deadline. “Just having passed the two-year mark of a global pandemic, great entertainment means more to all of us than ever before.

“This year’s AAFCA winners not only entertained us but educated and inspired us and we’re looking forward to celebrating them at the AAFCA Awards.”

According to its website, the AAFCA examines and promotes cinema in general, with a focus on films and television that depict the Black experience and especially those produced, written and directed from the perspective of the African diaspora.
