TikTok Stops User from Using Black Lives Matter in His Bio

By Briasia Russ

Popular TikTok creator Ziggi Tyler was flagged for “inappropriate content” after including the word “Black” in his bio. According to NBC, Tyler used several phrases like “Black Lives Matter,” “Black people,” “Black voices” and “Black success.” He also tried stating “I am a Black man” which only led to an error message advising him to remove any inappropriate content.

However, when Tyler tried “supporting white supremacy”, “white success”, and “I am a neo-Nazi” hedid not receive any error message nor was flagged for inappropriate content.

The reason behind this flagged message is because the app’s hate speech detector was triggered by the word “Black” and the word “die” in “audience”.

As reported by NBC, TikTok has apologized in a statement to NBC and has fixed the error.

“Our TikTok Creator Marketplace protections, which flag phrases typically associated with hate speech, were erroneously set to flag phrases without respect to word order. We recognize and apologize for how frustrating this was to experience, and our team has fixed this significant error,” a TikTok spokesperson said.

“To be clear, Black Lives Matter does not violate our policies and currently has over 27B views on our platform.”
