Riots continued in South Africa on Tuesday following the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma, with the death toll hitting 72, according to the Associated Press.

Most of the deaths occurred in two of the country’s provinces, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. According to reports, people were part of a stampede in shopping malls, where people took electronics, clothes, food and liquor.

“We understand that those unemployed have inadequate food. We understand that the situation has been made worse by the pandemic,” Premier David Makhura of Gauteng said. “But this looting is undermining our businesses here (in Soweto). It is undermining our economy, our community. It is undermining everything.”

The violence began on Thursday when Zuma started his 15-month sentence for contempt of court because he refused to testify as part of an investigation into corruption while he was president from 2009 to 2018, according to Fox News.
