Vanessa Bryant Won’t Undergo Psych Evaluation in Lawsuit

In Summary

A federal magistrate has ruled that Vanessa Bryant won’t be subjected to a psych evaluation in a lawsuit over the Kobe Bryant crash photos.

Vanessa Bryant won’t have to undergo a psychiatric evaluation as part of a lawsuit against Los Angeles County over the leaked photos of the helicopter crash that killed her husband, Kobe Bryant, and her daughter Gianna, Federal Judge Charles F. Eick said Monday.

She sued the county last year, alleging that she and her family suffered emotional distress after learning that sheriff’s deputies captured and shared photos of the crash scene.

The defendants claimed, in court documents, the family could not have suffered from distress triggered by photos they have never seen.

“The fact remains that no crash site photos taken by first responders have ever been publicly disseminated, as Ms. Bryant confirmed in her deposition,” said Skip Miller, a Century City lawyer whose firm was retained to defend L.A. County.

“We totally sympathize with the enormous loss she has suffered,” he said. “But as a legal matter, we don’t believe she could be harmed by something that didn’t occur.”

Luis Li, Bryant’s attorney, claimed that the psych evaluation of his client is unnecessary and her emotional distress from this entire ordeal was evident in her testimony.

“The County’s tactics are simply a cruel attempt to extract a price for victims to obtain accountability,” Li wrote in a court filing. “Rather than take accountability for conduct the Sheriff himself has called ‘wildly inappropriate’ and ‘disgusting,’ the County has chosen to pull out all the stops to make the case as painful as possible.”

The trial is scheduled for February 2022.
