Voice of Sebastian from ‘The Little Mermaid,’ Samuel Wright, Dies at 74

Samuel E. Wright, the voice of Sebastian in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, died on Monday from prostate cancer. He was 74.

The town of Montgomery, New York, where he and his family founded a cultural center, confirmed the news on its Facebook page.

“Sam and his family have impacted countless Hudson Valley youth always inspiring them to reach higher and dig deeper to become the best version of themselves,” the Facebook post said. “The greater Town of Montgomery Community mourns together today. As we say goodbye to a pillar in our community and ask everyone to share a memory and help us celebrate the life of this great man.”

His daughter Dee told The Hollywood Reporter that he battled prostate cancer for three years and died peacefully at home, calling him “the brightest light.”

Wright has had roles in Broadway productions, appearing in Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin and The Lion King, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He also performed the song “Under the Sea” in The Little Mermaid, which won the 1989 Academy Award for best original song.
