VP Harris Becomes First Female Acting President as Biden Gets Colonoscopy

In Summary

Conversations around Biden’s health have taken place even before he assumed the presidency. Biden, who turns 79 on Saturday, is the oldest person to be president.

President Joe Biden will transfer his presidential powers to Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday as he undergoes a routine medical procedure, ABC News reported.

“This morning, the President will travel to Walter Reed Medical Center for a routine physical. While he is there, the President will undergo a routine colonoscopy,” said White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

While it is normal for the vice president to receive presidential powers while the President undergoes a medical procedure that requires anesthesia, it is a momentous occasion this time around, as Harris will be the first woman to be acting president.

“As was the case when President George W. Bush had the same procedure in 2002 and 2007, and following the process set out in the Constitution, President Biden will transfer power to the Vice President for the brief period of time when he is under anesthesia. The Vice President will work from her office in the West Wing during this time,” Psaki said.

According to FOX 17 Nashville, he last had a complete physical in December 2019, where doctors determined he was “healthy, vigorous and fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency.”

During the 2020 presidential campaign, Biden addressed voters’ concerns about his health, saying, “The only thing I can say is watch. Watch! Check my energy level, determine whether I know what I’m talking about,” according to ABC News.
