White House Defends VP Kamala Harris After Reports of Dysfunction

In Summary

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Harris is an important ally to Biden and has played an essential part in the administration.

Following reports of tension between President Joe Biden’s office and Vice President Kamala Harris’, the White House has come to her defense on Monday.

“There’s been a lot of reports out there, and they don’t reflect his view or our experience with the vice president,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Monday. “The president relies on the vice president for her advice, for her counsel. She is somebody who is not only taking on issues that are challenging. She’s not looking for a cushy role here—no Vice President is, no President is—and that she’s somebody that is a valuable member of the team.”

On Sunday, CNN detailed “entrenched dysfunction and lack of focus” with Harris and her staff, frustrating the White House.

The vice president has reportedly told her aids that she feels politically limited as she looks at her political future, CNN reported.

Psaki said Harris is an important ally to Biden and has played an essential part in the administration.

“For anyone who needs to hear it. @VP is not only a vital partner to @POTUS but a bold leader who has taken on key, important challenges facing the country—from voting rights to addressing root causes of migration to expanding broadband,” she tweeted on Sunday.

Harris’ approval rating sits at 28%, which is lower than the president’s, according to a USA Today/Suffolk University poll.

Critics have blasted the reports against Harris and her historically low approval rating, calling it sexist and racist.

Late night TV host Jimmy Kimmel sounded off on his show last week.

“I think I know why Kamala’s ratings are low, besides sexism and racism, which are the obvious ones. It’s because whenever she’s next to Joe, standing near or behind him, she looks like an assassin,” Kimmel said.
