Actor Will Smith spent $100,000 to bring fireworks back to New Orleans on Independence Day, according to the Associated Press.
Smith, who’s in New Orleans, working on his new film Emancipation, learned that the city hadn’t planned on the 2021 fireworks show over the Mississippi River, according to city officials. Last year’s show was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced the news on Twitter on Friday. “The gift of city fireworks was made possible by actor and producer Will Smith, along with his company Westbrook.”

His film Emancipation is a true story about an enslaved man named Peter who worked on a Louisiana plantation, escaped and fought for the Union in the Civil War. Smith and his production company moved the film from Georgia to New Orleans, following Georgia passing a restrictive voting law.
“We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access,” Smith said in a statement in April, per Deadline.
