Ambler was killed on March 28, 2019, following a car chase that began in Williamson County and ended in Austin.
In October 2020, his family filed a wrongful death lawsuit, alleging former Sheriff Robert Chody allowed the A&E show “Live PD” to film his officers at work. Footage from the reality show followed officers on the pursuit against Ambler.
The complaint alleged the sheriff “encouraged his officers to engage in dangerous, high-risk police tactics because it made for more entertaining television in service to Live PD,” among other things.
Chody and Jason Nassour, the former Williamson County general counsel, were charged with tampering with physical evidence in the investigation of Ambler’s death, while Williamson County Deputies James Johnson and Zachary Camden were indicted on second-degree manslaughter charges.
In a statement following the settlement, attorneys for the Ambler family said, “While the Ambler family remains devastated by the loss of their son and loving father, they are proud that they fought for him and hope that this settlement and the changes that have occurred in Williamson County, Texas as a result of this case send a powerful message to law enforcement that ignoring a person’s pleas that they cannot breathe will no longer be tolerated.”
