A shocking situation happened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 13. A woman was sexually assaulted on a transit train and there were no witnesses who came to help her or call the authorities, according to CNN.

The rape happened on the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s Market-Frankford Line and it was described by SEPTA as a “horrendous criminal act.” What made it worse was that there were passengers on the train who witnessed the assault and did not act, according to CNN.
“Riders sometimes don’t know when to contact the police. When they see inappropriate behavior, behavior that you wouldn’t want your 10-year-old to see, call the police. Call 911. If somebody’s life is in jeopardy, hit the emergency button,” SEPTA Transit Police Chief Thomas Nestel said. “We want people to be our partners and to watch out for other riders.”

The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Fiston M. Ngoy and was taken into custody on Oct. 14. He was charged with rape, sexual assault and aggravated indecent assault, according to court documents.
Currently, he is detained at Delaware County Prison and his bail amount is $180,000. Ngoy has a preliminary hearing on Oct. 25.
Tim Bernhardt, who is the superintendent of the Upper Darby Police Department, praised the victim for coming forward despite what she went through.

“Unbelievably strong woman. She really is. She came forward, she provided a lot of information,” Bernhardt said to CNN. “She’s on the mend, and hopefully she will get through this.”
